Wenger Black Messenger Bag

I have been using this bag for about a month now and so far have been happily impressed with its general versatility and ease of use. It is made out of an extremely durable feeling outer shell and seems to hold up well to everyday use. I'm not throwing the bag around, but have been pleased with it nonetheless. As for its shape, it is built in a way that it maintains its original shape pretty well, however it also means it will kind of sit like a block on your lap too if you are holding it.

The pockets I use the most are the two outer ones. The smaller of the two has worked well for me to put a bus pass in for easy access. It isn't real large, but for something small you will be getting out frequently, it works well for that. The second larger pocket on the outside has become a catchall for other things I need frequently. Both zippers have been strong and I don't have any concerns about them breaking any time soon. The outside water bottle pocket I haven't found to be very useful. It will carry a 0.5 liter bottle ok, but isn't big enough to carry much of anything else and is a little awkward opening it. I may still find a use for it later.

Inside you need to pull open the main flap, which attaches by magnets. The magnets are relatively strong and keep the bag closed, but if you worry about your laptop at all, make sure you use the extra flap inside to secure it. I have carried an aluminum macbook in a sleeve in the bag and while it looks like it sticks out a bit when you first put it in there, the designer did a pretty good job making sure a 13" computer will fit. I think a 15" would fit ok too, but would probably not recommend trying a 17" unless you are really sold on the bag. Beyond the computer compartment there are several mesh pockets that you can put things in, although I have found they mostly just make it harder to put items in the main compartment. The main compartment isn't cavernous, but will hold more than an initial lookThere is also a divider to put documents into, which works well, magazine and other documents fit well there, but I don't know if a legal size pad would fit well.

Finally, there is a zip-up compartment inside the flap but outside the main compartment. This is a pretty convenient place to put pens and other things in a place that should be relatively accessible. But it can be a pain to open the bag and then unzip that compartment. Finally on the back of the bag there is a pocket that is made to put over a suitcase handle to make getting through airports easier. Haven't tested that part yet, but I have used it as a convenient place to put a magazine for quick access. For that it works great.

Overall, I would recommend this bag to someone who is looking for a relatively professional bag, but doesn't want to spend a large amount of money on it. I have found it stylish and with the not as wide easier to carry. For an everyday bag, it has worked great for me.

Good looking, trendy and sturdy bag, but too small to store a laptop. Has just enough room to store a hard cover book and few notepads at most. Weak magnets don't hold outer cover together, so chances of losing things. Not recommended for school or office use.

It has the rugged size and compartments to satisfy almost any user. You even get a place to carry your waterbottle into the outback with you and your trusty laptop.

This is a very well made product. I had read many reviews before deciding on this bag. I agree with others that this messenger bag is a very well made. Quality construction, compact, and clever design at a reasonable price. My only complaint, like so many others is that the magnets are not strong enough to keep the main flap closed.

Not as happy as I would like to be. Item lacks a secure lock, to keep items from falling out. In additional it is heavier in weight, causing you
to switch arms often. The zipper portion on the back of bag is fine, but when going through, TSA security very often, during the day its not convenient to use. I am a flight crew member, and spend the majority of my time in airports or aircraft, I hope AMAZON, management contacts me to have the bag returned, and try another bag.

I recently bought an Acer Aspire One and this bag is a great compliment to it. I now use this for my travel computer bag.

Note: I'm upping it to FOUR STARS. I think 3 is too low for this product. (I can't change the rating so have had to write it here)

For regular, everyday use, this bag will serve its purpose. It's solidly built and utilitarian. It's also nice and compact, given it's capacity to hold a 15" laptop. The zip-away water bottle holder is a smart and useful touch. And it even has a nice slot in the back so you can thread it onto the extended handle of the carry-on suitcase you are rolling along at the airport.

Having said that, if you do take this puppy on a business trip, watch out.

The main flap is held down by magnets which take, at best, a tenuous hold. They work fine upside-up. But sling that bag in an overhead baggage compartment and you'd better be careful when you pull it out or that copy of Playboy you bought at the airport may wind up in the lap of the 82 year old grandmother sitting next to you.

These magnets are my main beef. I like them for normal use because they provide quick access, but there are times, especially when traveling, when you need to just KNOW the flap is going to stay secure. I understand that the magnets can only be so strong so that they don't wreak havoc on the hard drives of laptops inside the bag. However, I've never understood why bag makers who use magnets don't provide a basic fastener or clip, out of view, under the flap, that you can optionally secure for those times when the bag may get knocked around a bit. It wouldn't impact style, and for a bag that lists for about a hundred and eighty green ones (of course it's available much cheaper), you'd expect a bit of ingenuity.

If you're not worried about having an absolutely securely fastened main flap and if the 'sensible-shoe' sensibility of it's design don't bug you then go for it. Style-wise, it doesn't really have any of the hipness that you'd expect from something calling itself a messenger bag. It just looks too 'luggagy' for that. For me, it's fine for business meetings where a more conservative look is appropriate, but for weekends at a cool cafe, I'd shoot for something a tad more urban.

I got this bag for my Dell Studio 15.It just fits though the lid does close with the help of the magnetic closure. It is a well made bag with plenty of room for folders, accessories, and other items. I'm very happy with my purchase. I don't know if a 17" laptop will fit so you might try and look at others.

I got this bag to lug my 15" Mac Book Pro back and forth to work. Unfortunately, the MBP is a little longer than the bag is tall so it extends above the bag a little. Regardless, the "lid" of the bag has no problems covering everythign up and the strap is long enough to keep everything in place.

There is lots of extra room for your cables and a notepad or what ever.

Everything feels solid and well made. I especially like the use of magnets to keep the cover in place, rather than some buckle.

This bag feels like it will last a long time.
