As Brian Gouge said in his review, it pairs quickly and effortlessly. 4-stars instead of five because you cannot use them while in their charging cradle. If you have a long work call, you could run into the old dying battery syndrome. My current Motorola MD671 handsets work in their cradle... a good thing too since they discharge in about 20-minutes on a new battery. And the battery is the "special" size/type that costs an arm & leg!!! :-( Of course, they're not bluetooth either.
Currently, the KX-TGA935B is ~$4 cheaper than the alternative KX-TGA930T, and they're water resistant & more substantial feeling. I bought 4 to replace my current phones, and will be donating my Motorola MD671 5.8GHz cordless set to Goodwill (darned thing is a POS). BTW: the KX-TH1211B works great with both my land line and my cell phone (especially now that I've found out the AT&T reception is 5-bars on the iPhone in my bedroom... it's 2 or 3 anywhere else in the house). If I can consistently use these handsets and the 1211 with my cell line, I'll be saying adios to the land service...

We decided to put an additional handset outdoors on our covered patio that gets exposed to blown in rain when it comes down hard. We also wanted to use it when gardening so being moisture resistant and drop resistant were top factors. The handsets that came with our pany's were just regular ones so they weren't cut out for the job. This additional handset is designed to do what we wanted! Physically, it's a little larger in size and has a pseudo-carbon fiber look to it. It's all quality, with the handset being able to adapt to night mode, an important factor since we don't want the outdoor handset ringing at night.
Can't attest to long term use just yet so I'll make an update over time. I am thrilled that the handset also uses regular AAA batteries (2) so when the stock NIMH batteries go kaput then I can easily procure new ones. No proprietary mumbo jumbo.

This handset, and the KX-TGA930T, are as far as I know, the only two handsets that work with the KX-TH1212B Panasonic Link-to-Cell Expandable Bluetooth-Enabled DECT 6.0 Phone System. This handset is notably (but not significantly) heavier and feels larger than the KX-TGA930T. The KX-TGA930T are the exact same handsets that come with the KX-TH1212B.
The buttons are all in the same place, so the phone operates exactly the same as the KX-TGA930T. I have not tried dunking it in water or hurling it at the walls, but my wife does take it outside/gardening/etc. We got one of these for that purpose, and it lives on the kitchen counter when it isn't traveling outside.
I have noticed no sound or volume difference compared to the KX-TGA930T. The Red circle and metal-grid graphic (just for looks, it's smooth to the touch) look nice to me but I do prefer the original KX-TGA930T since it is slightly lighter. They will not fit in each other's charging cradles so that helps ensure that the Kitchen phone generally remains in the Kitchen at least!
It pairs without any issue with the KX-TH1212B and stays that way, no issue with dropped calls or disconnected handsets. Range does not seem any different between the two handset models.
A big Pro for me is the batteries are rechargeable AAA's, 2 per handset. You'll never have to buy an expensive proprietary battery. And, when you do replace the AAA's it comes with, you can use your choice of higher mAh ones like Eneloop or Duracell.

"Monochrome print wonders" 2009-08-28

One acid test that I've been throwing at today's digital photography printers is to see how closely a black and white print from the digital printer matches a darkroom produced photographic print. I miss film, darkroom chemicals, and the touch and feel of enlargers, and watching prints slowly resolve as they wash through the developing agent. But I especially miss the silvery blackness of the prints against the glistening whites of the paper.
The whites have been captured well. Inkjet paper, at its best, looks as good as photographic paper finally. But what about the blacks? Here, we've been dependent upon the ink to carry the day. And black ink doesn't typically look just like the black of a monochrome print straight out of the wash sink.
The HP 38 line of ink comes incredibly close. Can I still tell the difference between a real print and an inkjet print? Sure, but the ink is becoming less the critical factor. With the HP printers, you can sometimes see the telltale sign of the geared wheel that drives the paper forward. And up close, you can see the spray of the inkjet on large solid areas of the image. But stand back a foot and those issues disappear. Now the question is simply: do the blacks match?
The HP38 Photo Black is about a 9 out of 10 where 10 would be a match for a photographic print. We're real close now, with only an oil like sheen when the light strikes the print from a certain direction to differentiate the inkjet print from the real print.
As others have noted, these inks run out quickly. If you like 13x19 prints (that's the whole reason to get the printer), then you'll go through these quickly. And when they run out, it might just be in the middle of a picture. You can swap inks, however, in the middle of a print run should that happen so my rule of thumb is to have one extra of each cartridge, ordering another one as soon as I've fed the replacement to the printer.
The carts have expiration dates on them, however, so you want to make sure that it's not going to sit on the shelf for two years before you feed your printer with it (the printer, amazingly, knows if the ink has expired and warns you and tells you that you're voiding the warranty, blah blah blah, before accepting the offering).
So great ink, incredibly expensive per drop but you have no choice in the matter. If you have the printer, you must have the ink.
"Good, But WAY Overpriced and Far Too Small" 2009-03-01

Is this good ink? Um...sure. It's at least as good as any other, so by all means don't hesitate to buy it based on quality. That said, it comes in tiny cartridges that don't last long -- especially the blacks -- and are about $30 each, which wouldn't be so bad except the printer in which I use them (HP's B9180) requires 8 of these cartridges to even operate. Thus, it's a rather expensive printer for a small business to keep operational, unless your circumstances allow you to charge clients for this expense as part of your projects. Most of my clients, on the other hand, would balk at that. But I digress.
Anyway, I should also note that when I say that I think this cartridge is overpriced, that does not mean that you should buy a generic alternative cartridge for less instead. Not only would they probably not be guaranteed to last 200 years, but to my knowledge, you can't. They do not exist. Which is all the more reason to consider again whether this is the way to go.
Of course, you may read this and think, "Hey, that's more an indictment of the printer than of the ink cartridge." True enough, but given their intertwined relationship, I think it's fair to point out that if you are now exploring the real costs of operating a piece of machinery for your office (the B9180), it's definitely worth looking around some more to see if you might get just as good a capability via another printer at a lower ink cost.

We had an older version of this scanner that scanned 25,000 slides before it finally wore out. We purchased this new version. The new unit appeared to have a CCD with poor sensitivity, plus a light leak. Could barely scan 4 slides when specs said it would scan 16 like the older version. Sent unit back as faulty, but ordered another. The next unit had no light leaks, but still poor sensitiviy. Still would only do three or four slides even with updated software. HP tech support claimed that was just the way it worked, and nothing much they could do. "Don't expect it to last" 2009-10-11

As with every other HP product I've owned (don't worry, I've finally learned my lesson), do not expect it to last for more than a year after its warranty expires. Mine expired 6 months ago and, while so far still functional, I've noticed what can only be described as a smoke stain on the inside of the bottom scanning glass, meaning some component is in the process of burning itself out. The old Acer (now BenQ) parallel port scanner I paid $50 for lasted over a decade, and the thing I replace it with I paid over four times as much to have it last less than a fifth of the time?
Additionally, the software also has issues with scanning slides that aren't 35 mm; it keeps trying to draw 35 mm rectangles on 1.5 in square images (120 film, I believe), forcing me to resize them each individually. Scanning such "non-standard" transparencies is the reason I bought this to begin with, believing that it would be able to handle transparencies of "arbitrary" size more easily.
I was also surprised by the lack of support for Windows Server (in spite of support for Windows XP x64), but at least that (unlike its combustibility and lousy software) is documented on the box.

I have a Brothers' laser printer, all in one, and in general have found their products to be reliable and to never need repair. However, I called Brother's main line because I wanted some information about a typewriter. I had contacted the company via e-mail and had not received a response. First, the representative who answered did not listen to me and spoke so quickly that he directed me to the wrong department. When I called back, he gave me another number, then hung up with hardly a thank you. When I called the second number he gave me, this representative asked me what I product I wanted. I told him I didn't know; thus my call to ask questions. In response to this he asked for my phone number. I gave my phone number and expected to ask some questions; instead, he stated that in order to continue, he wished for more information (I had not even bought anything) but that if I didn't want to give any personal information, I had to say "refuse" or "continue." I said I just had some questions because I did not think he would need any personal info if I just wanted some answers without committing to buy anything. To my surprise, the gentleman stated again, (quickly and abruptly, like the first representative), "In order to continue, you -must- say "Refuse" or "Continue!") This felt very strange to me. I felt very robotic and awkward and forced myself to do what he told me to do -- i.e.; say "refuse." When I asked my questions, he listed serial numbers so quickly that I had to repeat them back and I -felt- he was extremely impatient. When my questions were answered, I said "Thank you," but he had already said a "Thank you" and had hung up!
This is just from a customer service point of view, and it is from brother's headquarters, not related to Amazon's sales, I believe. But just FYI. I still like and trust brother's -products- very much.
I called Smith Corona and a gentleman named Bill answered and was quite nice and directed me to the model that would suit my needs because he knew what questions to ask a customer -- I believe that as a company, one should expect a customer to know less about the company's product and to help educate the customer re: the company's products as opposed to being unreceptive to customers' questions.
Just my two cents.

I received this for a gift and am extremely happy with it. I love to write short stories but often have writer's block, so I'm excited to have a new format. The best part about this typewriter is that even though it's electronic, it still makes the familiar old "clacking" sound as you type, and has the familiar typewriter font--really sets the mood for creative writing. I wouldn't have expected a typewriter to have spell-check, but this one does--it makes a little dinging sound if you spell a word incorrectly, and gives you the ability to erase one letter, the word, or an entire line with the (included and already installed) correction tape. You can adjust the positioning of the paper yourself with the knob on the side, which would be helpful when filling out forms. Includes a keyboard cover to keep dust out of the keys, and a carrying handle. Overall, the typewriter is easy to set up and use.

If there are times when a computer just won't do, this is a great typewriter for the money. Despite the many features it has, it is very easy to learn to use and I have had no maintenance problems whatsoever. I purchased it to take the DC Bar Exam and it worked well over 6 hours of intensive use. The only issue I noticied was when typing in the Line Print mode, sometimes the words would merge together leaving a non-sensical word. Overall though, it held up well and performed up to expectations for my needs. Certainly a good product for the money.

Poor documentation for the Epson V700 scanner, in fact there is no written documentation.
For example, to get instructions for loading and scanning a film strip you have to wade through a cumbersome file-a so-called User Guide.
Considering the price of this scanner, the least Epson could have done is furnish a User Guide on a CD.

Let me say up front that, because the V700 ships with a SilverFast image management program, this is essentially a joint review of device and software.
We're a family of photographers with a lot of legacy negatives and slide material, some ours, some inherited from our parents. We've tried several scanners, with so-so results, and found them slow and somewhat clunky to use. Which meant we made little headway with the huge quantity of material we were trying to get into digital format.
The reviews convinced us to try the V700, and we've been delighted. First, I won't say it's perfect - at this price point, we didn't expect to have a totally professional experience. If it were possible, we'd probably give it a 4.5 instead of a 5. Some of the glitches noted by others can be at least mildly irritating. Still, even with the basic SilverFast software shipped with it, it works much better than anything else we've tried. (And using the SilverFast Studio Ai with ME makes it even better - you have to order this separately, but you can get it as a download.)
When used with the shipped SilverFast program, the device is intuitive, which results in a fast learning curve. (The videos on the SilverFast support site are extremely helpful should a question arise.)
What has impressed us the most is the adjustability of the import controls, especially the ability to adjust F-stops 3 up or down on negative imports, which literally brings most heretofore unviable negative images "back from the dead." As to transparencies, the adjustments provided for their import are also helpful. If you combine this adjustment capability with Photoshop controls, it is truly amazing how much life you can return to images so faded or discolored that they're almost invisible to the naked eye. Evidently there's a lot more information left on even the worst of old slides and negatives than our cursory examination led us to believe.
Also, we like the speed. The scan process is reasonable as to time required. Also, the ability to scan multiple images at once is cool. Which reminds me of the plastic holder issue. The V700 ships with a good assortment of sizes. Still, it would have been nice to have been offered the option of purchasing spares with the scanner at perhaps somewhat less than the rather breathtaking price charged by after-market vendors like SilverFast.
As to ICE, unlike the experience of other reviewers, we definitely notice a difference when using ICE, especially on images with large areas of solid color. If you want to use ICE, do go through the steps of specifying exactly how you want to use it, as this very much affects not only speed but also the end output. The degree of detection and correction sensitivity that you set is critical. If you set the sensitivity high, you can get rid of just about any dust, etc., but the tradeoff for this much "cleaning up" is a significant degree of image softening. A setting somewhere in the middle seems to work best. We don't use ICE for closeup people images, instead doing any cleanup in Photoshop. Also, at least in our opinion, we would not use ICE to clean up material that is going to be reproduced in print form.
There's more one could say, but I think the above is what we've observed from our experience that would matter to most users.
In summation, we really like this product and recommend it.

this scanner seems to be so good (after a months use) that I'm tempted to start shooting film again after 8 years of nothing but digital. At 4800dpi,(6400 seems like overkill and photo-i's reviews indicate 4800 seems to be optimal) from a 35mm transparency you get approximately a 50mb file! Unless your printing murals, this is probably overkill too. To get that kind of file and resolution from a digital slr, be ready to get into the 20-24megapixal and 7 to $8000 dollar range for a camera. Of course, this is speaking from a position of strictly dollar for dollar resolution and file size.
AI's software is adequate to get a image into photoshop. stay away from any manipulation in scanning software unless no other choice. Not at all impressed w/ Digital Ice. It removes dust on color photos only, but upon magnified inspection of scanned image, leaves large pixilation where the dust was.

This is the second Epson scanner I've owned. I swore I'd never buy another after my first experience with Epson software, even though the scanner (under $100) did a beautiful job with 35mm slides.
After reading a lot of reviews on the V700 I changed my mind and purchased the unit a week ago.
Epson may know how to design scanners but they do not know how to write software to support them.
I have had problems saving custom scan settings for 6x6 negatives; it wants to reset to normal scan settings. I finally found that I have to deselect "thumbnail view." Unfortunately, thumbnail view is the best way to preview and crop. Custom settings are automatically named setting 1, etc. and you can not rename them to something recognizable.
The manual is worthless. If you do a search on a menu term it tells you the term is not found. The Epson website is not helpful either.
I've called support twice and both times had an extremely poor telephone connection; I had trouble hearing the tech and she had trouble hearing me.
I have scanned 35mm negatives, slides and 6x6 medium format B&W negatives and the results are great. If you're an experienced scanner and don't mind the lack of a manual or a decent telephone connection with tech support, then this may be the scanner for you.

This is the lowest price I have found for this product. The big-name stores charge over $30 more. I have purchased 3 now and all were excellent quality, delivered quickly, no problems at all.
Not sure how much I can say about a print cartridge. Either it works, or it doesn't. This works. Installation is fast and easy, so no complaints. Lasts about as long as they claim it should. Obviously it would be a lot nicer if it were half the price, but that's how the manufacturers sell their printers at ridiculously low prices -- they make it up on the cartridges.
I have a Canon ImageClass 6550. I have used it to make copies of my notes and homework for a class I teach in Chemistry because I am not compensated for it. With 28 students and making printout of homework that altogether consist of 8-19 pages 28 times (224-532 pages) which uses up the cartridge fast. I also make printouts of my notes which could be 30-60 pages per chapter (840-1680 pages). This uses up the cartridge fast. Alternatively, when I make copies the density is too high and I have to lower it manually. Moreover, I have to take the cartridge out and reshake it several times; otherwise I get white streaks on printout. So switching between copying and printout is not without problems. So I dislike using the 6550 for copies because I believe it uses up the cartridge faster. Moreover for the same usage of about 3000 pages, I can use an HP 1320 with a cartridge that costs $76 from HP. This Canon cartridge costs $155 and is slowly rising. The Canon cartridge strikes me as being doubly expensive. Which would you rather pay, $155 to Canon or $76 to HP for 3000 pages? I think the cartridge is not competitive in price and performance compared to HP.
A wonderful and efficient machine to work complicated documents like double-sided printing and pdf. The ink is high volume and Amazon has the best price.
This product was ordered weeks ago and finally got an email that said that they no longer stocked this product. So, never delivered.
