When this calculator first came out it came with a nice paper manual, the latest version only includes a CD. I can download a manual if I wanted it electronic. I miss the old fashion paper manuals.

It's very hard to review a calculator because they tend to have so many functions and features that it's hard to do a quick review on it. However, I'm very glad that HP released this classic calculator.
At the end of the day, you can buy a calculator that has more features/functions than this one for less money. Some of the Casios have more features but that's not the reason most people buy this particular calculator. I bought it because I owned one of the original HP 35s and then a more modern HP 15C. The 15C still works but its too valuable to carry around. I grew up before computers when a good calculator was so much faster than a slide ruler (so that dates me a bit).
I don't do a ton of heavy trig or engineering anymore and I think the people at HP knew that the buyers of this calculator didn't do those kinds of calculations -- they designed it for the things that we use calculators these days. It's easy to use for what most of us use it for: small math problems, conversions from metric system to imperial, conversions from C to F degrees etc that makes you like this calculator. It has a ton of very easy to use features like that which makes it very nice. This calculator doesn't have memory expansion although it is programmable.
I do wish that they had put the stack manipulation buttons closer to the Enter Button, that's my biggest gripe.
Overall, if you grew up in the 70s or 80s, this is a great updated calculator to the titans of that era. Enough features so make it a true scientific calculator, not too many that its incomprehensible, very easy to use, looks great.
I wouldn't characterize it as a carry calculator, its a bit on the big side, my 12C is much better form factor to carry so this 35S sits on my den at home and it's always ready.
It's a great trip through memory lane but if you're a true scientific or engineering student, you can probably get one of the graphing calculators or some other super feature rich calculator.

I am an engineering student and I found this calculator very helpful. The only thing I would like to see be improved on this is the ability to for the ALG mode to be made similar to the TI-30s function, that is... if you set an operation (say SIN(15) + SQRT(15)) and you get an answer, but all of a sudden you forgot to add another number, then with the TI-30S all you can do is hit the up button and that same operation is still saved for correction or addition of extra operations (and you can do this a lot of times if you perform multiple operations, thus saving you time on double checking your work). This really comes in handy during a test since time is sensitive, and you're more likely to make some mistakes when entering the numbers especially if you have a complex operation involving fractions, square roots, etc. this is just one of the many issues on the ALG mode. For example the parenthesis appears twice thus you need to erase one of them to get it correct. Again, finding these corrections are time consuming, especially during a test.
I really appreciate the HP-35's ability to have room for more memory (from A-Z) which is awesome and the ability to display constants ( Avogadro's number, gravital constant, etc) but I think if they made the ALG notation much similar to the TI-30s or the Casio calculators, it would be a very powerful calculator. There is no doubt that in RPN mode is much more efficient but again the ALG mode needs more improvement. I hope they do something about it.

Having used HP financial calculators for nearly 30 years, starting with the 12C, I found this to be the absolutely best calculator ever. The 12C was good in its day, the 17B was better, because it was faster, the 19B was ok, albeit chunky to use, the 17BII, was poor, as the keys were poor quality, but the new 17BII+ is back to great, better than the 12C or 17B, which were my two former favorites. I would highly recommend this calculator to anyone in finance; it is fast and the keys feel good - like the keys on the 12C.
I bought this in 2008 to replace another HP (48G) used extensively for work. I disregarded the previous reviews that this was an inferior product compared to prior HP calculators and have found that this was not a good idea. My main complaint is with keystrokes not registering. Now granted I believe you can turn on the beeper to sound when keystrokes are registered, but I don't want my coworkers listening to beeping all day, so that's not always an option. I have an old 12c and still have an old 48G and this product is now third in line behind those other two.
The 12c might be older and have less functionality, but its still a better option when it comes to usability.
I've always had good luck with HP products, but the HP 17bII+ is a bit of a clunker. The problem is that the keys are what can only be described as 'sluggish.' Meaning that it sometimes takes 2 key presses in order to be recognized. As you might imagine, this causes a LOT of errors. Rather than being able to use the calculator as one might do, that is, without really having to concentrate on the device itself, the HP 17bII+ forces you to take your mind off your real task in order to make sure that key presses are properly registered. Sorry, but I can't recommend this product.
One other thing... I DID call HP customer service about this a few months ago. They had me remove the batteries and do a complete reset of the static memory. It seemed to solve the problem for awhile, but eventually it returned.
Excellent easy to use calculator that does alot of functions. This is my second 17b.
The calculator is easy to use and great for all financial calculations. I greatly recommend it.
If I had to buy a financial calculator again, I would get the classic 12c. I needed the calculator for MBA accounting classes and found the 17BII+ adequate. I would have rather bought the 12c for less money. As a cosmetic note, the slightly curved sides of the calculator annoy me.

Love it. Works really well. No problems with the keys. It has the same key feel as the 12b.
I owned an HP 17B II for 18 years (yes, one calculator actually lasted that long!) and I loved it. It did everything I needed it to do, the buttons and display all worked great, and I noticed that it was built in Singapore. Well, the old thing finally died earlier this year and I bought a new HP 17 BII+, which I noticed was made in China. What a disaster! Half the time when I push the buttons, the machine doesn't register anything! That can be a major problem when working with a calculator, because you have to wonder all the time whether the machine actually has all the correct data inputs. I hate this calculator, but I still love the functionality of the HP 17B II. I can't wait for HP to come out with a new version, hopefully built somewhere that cares about quality! I'm really disappointed in HP for charging $80 for a calculator that isn't flawlessly made.
One of the best and most reliable products from HP. I had the newest version (2007) of the HP 17BII+ shipped to me. It's a great calculator, so far so good. Instructions and calculations are easy and simple to do. You will probably need to follow a textbook, but calculations are pretty well-explained in the manual, with a few examples too.
It has two lines of data input. Answers still remain on your screen even if you switch off the calculator, until you manually run another calculation or clear the screen. I use this calculator for statistics such as to find the mean, correlation coefficient and linear estimates, financial calculations such as finding the time value of money, interest, bond valuation, depreciation and cash flows, and regular math stuff. You can even use it for business-related queries, such as business percentages and markup, and input equations into the memory list. You can also do a few currency exchange calculations. Even making changes to a list that you already entered is simple.
It's light-weight, and easy to take around in the handy case. It comes with a pair of batteries, which are easily installed when you open the pack. It also has the clock option, where you can adjust for the current time and date, as well as set appointments. A total of 28K memory to store data, lists and equations. You can also print information using the HP 82240 Infrared printer.

Arrived quickly, everything fine, what I expected and good price. Only problem bought for my 88 year old mother and she had a difficult time trying to figuire out how its works. Just wanted a calculator that prints.
Many other reviewers have already made the point, I can only affirm it. For the price, it's a great calculator but the instructions are awful and very difficult to follow. I ended up spending $12 after the fact for replacement ink cartridges because not only are the directions/illustrations unclear about how to install the ink cartridge, but if one is not careful, the cartridge slips out of your fingers and easily becomes irretrievably lost inside the guts of the calculator. (I can hear it rattling around in there, but cannot get it out.) Be warned, local supply stores' listing of replacement cartridges will not have this model listed in their stores, so be sure to ask and make sure that you get the proper replacement cartridge (the HR 100 is NOT the same as the HR 100TM; I learned the hard way.)

I have looked in a lot of places for this type of machine to replace the one I had that grandaughters spilled coke on and I hadn't been able to get exactly what I wanted until this one. Thank you.
I bought this calculator because my elderly mother wanted one that prints a tape. I was very pleased and surprised to receive the product within 2-3 days because I purchased it just one week before Christmas. The biggest negative for me is that the only instructions are very difficult to read and comprehend, and do not address basic usage - such as inclusion of something identifying the purpose of each of the keys and examples of simple mathematical functions. Accountants are not the only people who want to calculate with a paper tape; elderly people and less skilled users also want this feature.
This item is easy to use, and very handy for all my needs, from simple to complicated problems. I love the fact that it prints out in two colors, quite quickly.
this calculator replaces a very old calculator that had died. This one is easy to use and has many options whether to print or not to print and is relatively quiet during operation.
