This is the second of these units that I have owned. The first one is riding in a rental suv somewhere. This speller comes through when the more expensive models will not. It is simple and straight forward to use and is small enough to fit where other spellers will not. I know it has other features and they work fine but I use it mainly as a speller.

I have had this little gadget for almost 20 years and LOVE it! I use it mainly for crossword puzzles but have played hangman, word builder, word jumble with it. I also put phone numbers in it. It started going blotto on me, about a year ago, so I managed to pry the back off and replace the battery. It's still going strong. This is a must have if you do a lot of crossword puzzles!!

The Franklin Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary that I purchased is a great product. I have recommended that co-workers purchase the item.


This product has several features but not the one I was hoping for. I had wanted to type in my own sentence and have it translated instead of having to choose from the ones it has in it's system. I misunderstood what it was capable of doing.


This little "gem" is very handy and easy to use. My husband uses it while he's learning English as a Second Language at the University class he's taking. He never leaves home without it! Thank you so much to whom ever invented it!


I love this product. I do wish it had a lit display for using in those dark restaurants


Despite several bad reviews, I purchased this product after losing my Franklin BES-1850. I started using Franklin English-Spanish dictionaries over ten years ago and they have proved to be very beneficial in learning Spanish. This one is no exception. Some reviews said the sound wasn't loud enough; mine is perfect. One complained about the screen being too small; mine is more than adequate. Some complained about it not having a backlight; although it is convenient, it is not necessary. I would tell anyone who is considering buying this to go ahead and buy it. You won't regret it.

We have yet to encounter a word that is not in the device. We are very happy with the content. Previous purchases were disappointing. I believe it is an excellent value for the price. The phrases are also useful in clarifying content. There are several games that are very useful for anyone trying to use the BES-1890 to learn English. I highly recommend this product as an excellent value.


The Spanish-Emglish dictionary is a good tool. However, the keyboard is hard to type and the resolution is not very good. Hope that Franklin can improve those the next time.

Great translator with great features but the sound is so low it is useless. I still love it. Also really wish it was backlit.


I am always learning so much from this. The low lighting and sound quality doesn't bother me. It serves it's purpose and it's a great product for the price. I do wish that it could translate phrases too, but it only does one word at a time.
