"THIS PHONE HAS REALLY BEEN A DISAPPOINTMENT" 2009-09-14
By Andrea Ferrara (New Jersey)
I ordered this Uniden Dect telephone about 3 weeks ago and I am highly disappointed. I was always led to believe that Uniden was a good name of cordless phone manufacturers. However, after receiving this phone and using it for the past 3 weeks I deplore its performance. First off, when speaking on the phone I hear a constant echo of my own voice and secondly, when using the speaker phone feature, the sound cuts out throughout the entire conversation.
I have sent an e-mail to Uniden about these issues and am now waiting for a response from them with a solution. I do not feel very confident to say the least.

"Like this phone system very much" 2009-07-18
By Margaret A. Woolfork
My neighbor had this phone system with several head sets that she purchased from a local store. She loaned me one of her headsets when
our digital phone modems were hit by lightning and I could use her phone
head set from
across the street. I ordered this phone system with 2 head sets for my husband for Father's day. we both like it very much and he uses the
intercom feature quite often to page me in the house.

"Sorry, Not Impressed" 2009-07-18
By PG (East Coast)
Received it, charged it, used it for a day, unplugged it, boxed it up, sent it back.
I purchased this phone to replace a GE 2.4 GHz cordeless set with buttons that no longer work when pressed. Up until now the GE has been a really good phone with excellent sound quality.
I assumed the latest DECT 6.0 technology would have an equal, if not better, sound quality than my old 2.4 GHz so I was surprised to find that the sound quality was worse. I found this Uniden to have a tin can, almost muffley sound to it that was annoying. I didn't even want to give it time to see if it was something I could get used to so I sent it back.
I'm hoping the problem is the Uniden phone itself and not the DECT 6.0 technology because I turned around and ordered a GE28851FE2 w/DECT 6.0. I haven't received it yet so the jury still out.
Bottom line is, if you're used to clear sound quality you're going to notice a difference with this phone and I don't mean for the better. If you're used to muffled sound quality then you might like the features of this phone.
UPDATE: Received my GE phone and the sound quality is HEAD OVER HEALS BETTER than this Uniden. Not just that but I like pretty much everything about the GE better...the curve of the phone, the ring tone selection, the free GOOG411 button, everything. Sorry Uniden.

"We like it!" 2009-04-09
By J. Long (New Hampshire)
We bought this one month ago. This is a great machine chocked full of features. It is easy to use, good sound quality, great value. The only thing we wish it had was a memo feature so we can leave messages ourselves. We are very happy with it otherwise.

"Bad Handset Microphone" 2009-10-12
By LB (Los Angeles, CA United States)
We bought this system in July of this year. Within a short time, one of the handsets had a problem. Part of its functionality would cut out. Specifically, the ability to hear oneself while talking would stop working, although the person on the other end could still hear you. It would then start working again. We liked the phone system otherwise (like most modern phones, it's not great, but it was better than average), so we decided to return the faulty handset to the dealer (Sears) and replace just the one handset. Unfortunately, at least one of the other two handsets later developed the same problem, and it's too late now to return the system to Sears (they accept returns for 30 days).
I'm assuming it's a flaw in the handsets themselves, having nothing to do with the base and the signal from the base, but I don't know for sure. I called Panasonic Tech Support, and the rep said to remove the batteries fromt the handset and reinsert them. I did that this morning, and we'll see if it does anything. Frankly, I don't see why it should, but I don't want to appear unwilling to troubleshoot the issue. The rep said that if that didn't work to ship it back to them for service. Naturally, she said I have to pay for shipping (in California, where we live, companies are required to have local service centers, but most companies, apparently including Panasonic, ignore the law and hope they don't get sued).

"Panasonic Cordless" 2009-09-23

Very user friendly cordless phone with great range from base. Maintains charge a long time, has extremely clear sound and volume. Price is reasonable. The only negative is that store merchants don't carry the individual phones. They are only available for purchase on the internet.

"Phone Cuts Out Repeatedly!" 2009-09-20
By Robby's mom (North Carolina, USA)
Wow, was I relieved to see that the reviewer below had experienced a problem identical to my own. It does make me wonder what the folks at Panasonic are thinking by marketing this phone. There is something terribly wrong with it. I've kicked myself many times for having purchased this system. Like the reviewer below, all of my handsets do the same thing. They cut out without warning. The voice at the other end of the line begins to fade and the next thing you know, you're running to another room to pick up another handset. I've been through the whole process described below of unplugging all of the handsets and removing the batteries and putting them all together again. Not fun. Then they will work for a short time and go right back to malfunctioning. After numerous conversations with Panasonic Tech Support I finally got fed up and said, where do I send these back. And I did send them and they were replaced under warranty. Duh, the replacement phones do exactly the same thing. Do not buy this model. Something is wrong in the design. You may get a good one, you may get one like mine. Not worth it. Destroyed my faith in Panasonic.

"Good but with problems" 2009-09-14
By Christina W. Li (Canada)
The phone reception is good, i have the base planted on the 2nd floor of my house and still can hear just fine down at the basement. My only problem is when you create a new answering machine greeting the phone, it will always display "new voice mail" even tho there is none. If anyone can help fix this please tell me cause its getting dam annoying..

"Panasonic Built a good One." 2009-09-13
By Jerry J. Townsend (California)
We have the Panasonic Dect 6.0 answering device and a total of six (6)Panasonic Dect 6.o mobile telephones.I'm older(76)and have had many different telephones over the years, but this telephone is the best all around phone that I have owned. The only downer is that navigating sometimes is confusing and a little difficult to follow. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about this telephone and recommend it above all others that I have had in the past..

panasonic Extra Handset for TG9390 Series, Dect

I researched this product thoroughly and was convinced it was among the best on the market. I am replacing an older Siemens Gigaset 8800. I thought for sure the DECT 6.0 would offer the clearest sound with a very good signal. It didn't take long for me to be surprised when these phones would go into periodic garbled mode. There was no consistency to the sound degradation; it seemed to happen with different handsets and in various locations around my home. I need an updated phone since Siemens doesn't seem to have very good offerings these days. unfortunately , it won't be this phone.

very clear reception. base unit would benefit from key backlighting. Phone book entries are also somewhat cumbersome. Inability to tag name the handsets is also an annoyance

This phone system makes our business run so much more smoothly. We love the flexibility of the 2-line cordless phone connected to the corded phone. It was easy to learn how to use, the buttons are good sized, it is back-lit, and the options for the ringer allow us to choose a pleasant tone plus ringer off option for night time.

These are great phones, but even better was the vendor I purchased from.
Excellent service. Highly recommeneded.

I am very dissapointed in my purchase. I replaced my old Panasonic phone system with the new system and it has hardly any range at all. I called Panasonic and the lady told me the phone was only good up to 5o feet. I find this hard to believe since 50 feet isn't very far and the old system worked flawlessly. Panasonic is known for its quality, but they really let me down here. The system is basically worthless, but I am stuck again with a dog with fleas. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this system a 1. Poor me, I guess I need to go buy na new one.

Product Description
GE
cordless accessory handset for 27909 Design Series stainless steel phone features Dect 6.0 interference free technology and is WiFi friendly and the system is expandable up to 4 handsets. Backlit LCD with multilingual message display, caller ID, call waiting. Functions include speed dial, one touch redial, 40 name/number caller ID memory, directory memory and selectable ringtones. Has built in clock and calendar with automatic date and time set. Handset functions as intercom and is hearing aid compatible with visual ringer. Comes with back up battery and 1 year warranty.

While I have no complaints with the primary handset/base-station, this secondary handset/base-station is very flawed. The catch between the base and handset is designed in such a way that the angle at which you mount the handset to the base has to be perfect or the handset will not catch onto the base and will fall down. Compounding the problem is the fact that the base is a light flimsy piece of plastic that, if not secured to a wall, will likely be just pushed around on the table surface when attempting to mount the handset. It is extremely frustrating to say the least.

Only purchased because it compliments the main phone. This has to be the hardest electronics setup I every went through. Don't bother with help from GE, they contracted it out to the Philippines and the guy was only reading the same instructions I had. I went through programming this phone 10 times before I finally got it right. The procedures were always the same, the only thing I figured out that made the difference was that you have to hold the phone very close to the base station and do not get your hand in between them. Works well after you get it set up. Battery goes in before you plug it in the AC adaptor. Pulling battery and reinstall is needed to reset.

Phone works fine, and looks good. Two issues:
1.) Initiating the phone to communicate with the base is difficult. Follow the directions at the GE website to reset the base. Involves unplugging the base, removing the batteries, etc. but it works.
2.) Stand sucks. Too tippy. Too hard to get the handset to land in the stand correctly. If you're patient, it all works eventually.
Bill Jenko
Kemah, TX

A little tricky to register the phones, but using the suggestions in other reviews, you can eventually do it. Answering machine has clearer voice (better speaker) than some. Remote dial-up access to messages is spotty.

This is difficult to set up and it (and the base has a jarring, unpleasant ring tone).
I guess the sound quality is ok as far as a cordless phone goes.
Stand is lightweight and tends to fall over/is easy to knock over.
I have tried to figure out if the tone can be changed but have not determined that it can.
I liked the look of this and the base set but ... I am planning on replacing it.

Call the Customer Service line. I see several reviews where the phone couldn't register with the base and I was lucky enough to have the same problem. So I called Thomson customer service, not really expecting very much (I even had the Amazon return policy on my computer while on the phone.) Much to my surprise they were actually helpful. I did what they told me to do and it worked. If you have the same problem this is all you have to do:
Make sure to do these steps in order!
1. Unplug the power to the base phone.
2. Unplug the phone line to the base phone.
3. Remove the batteries from the extension.
4. Wait 15 minutes.
5. Now reassmble in the reverse order (ie. Reinstall the batteries, etc.)
6. Follow the directions to register the extension phone.
This worked for me, I hope this is helpful for you.
I give this product 4/5 stars because it wasn't ready to register right out of the box. The phone performs exceptionally well and I would give it 5 stars otherwise.

We purchased this handset about six months after purchasing the "master" phone. I admit I was initially a little concerned about the compatibility and performance. I needn't have worried. The set up took maybe a minute and the phone has worked flawlessly, despite being located in the exact opposite end of our house (it's nice not needing to add a phone line to the room too). The fact that it has the same functionality (minus the answering machine) is an extra bonus. Now I don't have to run down to the master phone or dig out my phone book when I need to make a call. Highly recommended!

Four different adults read the instructions, and not one of them could get this handset to register with the base. I'm going to send it back.

I purchased three of these phones to add to the wall unit I have in my kitchen. I like many of the features but the intercom is my favorite: it has reduced my yelling instructions across the house to the kids. My only complaint is that the base is so light that when you attempt to place the phone back in it, it falls over. You must hold the back of the base unit in order to reconnect the phone. It's a little irritating when you're in a hurry and can take a number of attempts before it connects. Also, because it takes a little extra effort, my kids fail to put it back so then a phone hunt is necessary. The search feature makes ALL the phones beep...not a great idea.
In terms of esthetics, it has a very nice appearance. The instruction manual is one of the most ridiculous I've ever encountered. Instead of being a booklet, it's a HUGE piece of paper that completely covered my kitchen table.

I bought this product and am really impressed with the quality and functions of it. For the price, this is the best buy I have found in a add on cordless phone system with answering machine.

Product Description
The SE6591B cordless phone by
philips uses DECT 6.0 technology that offers a crisp and clear sound for all your phone conversations. Enjoy high quality conversations with
philips Enhanced High Def Voice. The sophisticated technology, high-quality speaker and real acoustic chamber of the Enhanced High Def Voice, bring each of your phone conversations to a superb level of clarity. The phone can store up to 200 names giving you the convenience of storing phone numbers for friends and family in one place. The full color LCD display screen and brightly lit keypad make it easy to dial outgoing calls and see names and numbers of incoming calls. The phone features a variety of polyphonic ring tones allowing you to match specific rings for family and friends. Use the speakerphone located on the base and handset to enjoy the convenience of talking hands free. Never miss a call with the digital answering machine. The answering machine can record up to 30-minutes of talk time and features a message-counter on the docking station so you know how many new messages you have. The docking station also has a keypad for greater dialing flexibility. The SE6591B is capable of connecting up to 8 handsets.

Philips/Dect...think it would be the best/newest portable phone system. Wrong ..it it the worst. Lousy handsets..no volume control. Even the base units volume adjustment is poor. Don't waste your money or time. I should have listened to the neg postings that I read prior to purchasing the system. Anyone want this unit??? You can have it.

This phone looks good - but that is where the positive feedback ends. The sound quality was horrible, the buttons would not function, the ringers were very unprofessional. This phone was quickly returned.

I read many interviews to find the best 2-line DECT on the market. I looked at this SE659 for months and bought it with a second handset a few months after it came available. After three weeks of continuous use I found it nearly unusable because of a confusing and poorly engineered user interface. My rule of thumb is that if my team can't use the phones and communicate it is a loss to our business.
I love European engineering and like the quality of build with the phones. The sound was generally excellent with reception beyond the range of my current 5.8MHz Panasonic 2-Line set. I had the occasional static after inserting a Plantronics headset but it quieted down after a minute or two.
I liked the common phonebook and the ability to setup two remote voice mail services for `message waiting' indicators. It worked with Vonage and TMobile VOIP. I liked the OLED color screens.
Here's where it falls down: Time after time I would see team members try to answer a phone call and they would press the most obvious button, only to get a dial tone which they couldn't close as the other call went to voice mail. This happened to many people of reasonable intelligence.
Another mis-engineered `feature' occurs once a message is on voice mail. The handset appears to give no other choice than to call voice mail with no obvious means to exit the menu for other functions. Perhaps there is an argument that I'm used to my current handset but I really wanted this to work. I read the manual and learned the idiosyncrasies but found myself as frustrated as the rest of our team after a couple weeks.
I don't like to turn new stock into returns. The scratchy headset connection was cause for RMA-but the real problem here is a counter-intuitive user interface. It may feel nice in the hand...but the proof of the pudding is still in the eating.

I'd been waiting for a good phone replacement system for over a year that had the capability of 2 lines & had DECT 6.0 technology. I'd read just about everyone's reviews on this system & the majority of people thought it had excellent sound quality since it was made by "Phillips".
Pros:
It is small & compact on a desk-doesn't take up too much room.
Easy to understand system set up & programability.
You have the ability to add more handsets at a later date.
It's great to be able to pick up messages from any handset.
And it's great for a "2 office" home where 2 separate lines are used all the time.
Cons:
It's pricey for how it's made. It's not the best quality phone. Other systems I've had with similar keypad material-the rubber keypad numbers eventually wear off with use. The most important item that I researched & also what helped me to make a decision to purchase this was everyone's opinion that the "sound quality" was excellent. The answering machine recordings as well as talking to someone on the phone sounds like you are either in an echo chamber or under water. You have to listen to the recording several times to catch what people are saying. And I don't need a hearing aid! This was very disappointing. Philips needs to go back to the drawing board & redesign a few things like installing higher quality speakers & keypads! I hope that this helps you in your decision process.

I'm impressed, unlike some reviewers my experience to date with this system has been exactly what I wanted and needed. I ordered this unit with two additional handsets to replace an older Panasonic 5.8Ghz two line system. Like other reviewers I found the features and specs exactly what I was looking for. To date the performance of the base and the handsets has been outstanding. For my home/office use I wanted a handset on the base and not a corded phone on the base as seems to be the case on many two line phone systems currently available.
Installation and setup was incredibly easy with auto handset registration. Note that handsets should be charge for 24 hours before normal use. However the batteries that come with the system will power on the handset immediately after insertion and begin to search for the base so you may want to plug in the base first before activating the handsets. The handsets will be assigned a consecutive number for easy identification but this can be easily changed later.
The clarity with DECT 6.0 is excellent. The equipment both handsets and base not only appeal with their aesthetics but both are light weight and do not consume excessive space like older multi handset and base units. I am not using the wall mount so I cannot comment on its usefulness.
The speaker function on the handsets is impressive, loud and clear which helps my wife who has sever hearing damage. The base speaker is also good. I have not had any issues with dialing or the keypad keys on the base as some reviewers complained about. The LCD readouts on both the handsets and base make sense and are easy to read and use. The color background is an appealing novelty but not of any real benefit. It is easy to make snap judgments about the quality of signals but I have found this is often dependent on the calling or receiving parties line or phone, especially cell phones. Having tested and knowing what the line or reception quality was at the other end of a given call I was able to see really how well this system and these handsets work. Excellent in my experience.
There are a lot of great features and I'm sure from reading other reviews that some folks are not aware that they can do things they think the system doesn't allow. I guess we all hate to read manuals but this system is easy enough that my wife has worked most of it out without reading anything at all because she really hates manuals.
The handsets use rechargeable AAA batteries which is a huge plus over those outrageously expensive proprietary batteries of older systems. Everybody has different needs, use their systems in different was and will have different opinions. Still I recommend that if you currently have a home/office two line phone system requirement then the Philips SE6591B/17 base and SE6590 handsets are worth evaluating against any other two line options available to see if they suit your needs as they have mine.
On my wish list is wireless for using a Bluetooth headset with the system.

I can't say I'm terribly impressed. The phone lacks quality of design, both in hardware and software. The software is unintuitive and reminds me of something written in 1995. The hardware is uninspired and doesn't confirm well to the hand and ear. Call quality is acceptable, but nothing spectacular. Nothing thrilling here; just another boring phone.

I was very disappointed with this product, and I had to return it (and I hardly ever return ANYTHING). I was looking for a 2-line phone that could handle 6 extensions, has an answering machine, and was a Dect 6.0 that wouldn't interfere with my wireless computer network -- my 900 MHz phone near my computer crackles like crazy so I have to go into another room to use it! This system fit the bill for me, and I thought the color display was cool. Problem is that the color display is next to useless because all you can do is choose from 3 pictures for your background, and when you make or answer a call, it goes to a gray screen. So much for the cool color screen. There was a big problem with the quality, too. The phone crackled, and the answering machine crackled (like a bad speaker). Thought this was supposed to be a super high-def speaker?! Nope. Not clear AT ALL. The biggest problem for me, though, was that this phone DOESN'T HAVE AUTO-ANSWER! That means you HAVE to press a button to answer a call -- you can't just pick up the phone to answer it. For someone that is used to just picking up the phone to answer it, this means that I will get a loud, ringing phone in my ear until I remember to press the stupid button. While there is USUALLY an auto-answer option you can choose via the menu on most phone systems, there isn't that option on this phone. Strange, considering that there IS an auto-HANGUP option (where you can hang up the phone and not press a button to disconnect the call). Auto-answer just seems very basic to me, and would especially be annoying for my husband, who has bad vision and wouldn't want to search for that little button every time he answers a call.
For those reasons, I decided to return this system and look for something else.

I've been waiting for a 2-line DECT phone to hit the market and this one had all of the features that I wanted with the possible exception of a Bluetooth interface.
Likes:
- There are discreet keys for speaker and mute on both the desk unit and the handset. This is much better than trying to get to these features through soft keys.
- The voice quality and handset range is excellent. The DECT technology did not interfere with any wireless network devices and there was no interference whatsoever heard on the phone.
- The speaker phone and microphone quality were very good, although the speaker phone volume is a bit weak and needs to be operated at the maximum volume level to be useful.
- Having both the deskset and handset keypads is very convenient.
- The lit key surrounds are nice.
Dislikes:
- Not having seen one in person, I was a little surprised at the size of the unit. This is a very compact and lightweight unit with a smallish display and tiny screen text fonts.
- The buttons are made of a soft material but have smooth slippery surfaces that aren't as pleasant to use as most rubber-type keypads.
- The setup functions are rather clumsy in their execution, but otherwise get the job done.
Deal Breakers (for me at least):
- On the deskset keypad, there is an annoying delay from when you press the key to when the number is accepted by the phone. For me, this often resulted in dropped number entries and miss-dials.
- The keypad feel on the handset is OK, but the keys on the deskset felt cheap to me. My particular unit had two bad keys that you had to hit very hard just to get them to register an entry, but even the other keys had no tactile feel, which just compounded the delay problem. You can set a tone to sound when you hit a key, but the phone also plays a tone when accepting the number, so you have multiple tones per keystroke - very odd.
- When a line is in use from another phone in the house, it doesn't light up the line so that you know it's in use.
I've been waiting for this phone to become available since it was first introduced at the CES show back in January and really wanted to like this product, but unfortunately just couldn't live with all of it's shortcomings and returned it. Hopefully some other manufacturers will start introducing 2-line DECT phones soon, as the underlying technology appears to be excellent. My opinion is that Philips missed the mark on this early entry.

I found this to be a quality product.
1) Sound quality is very good, especially with the XHD Sound feature enabled.
2) Sound volume is exceptional, especially on the handset.
3) Displays could be a little larger.
4) Response time on the base dial pad is a little slow, but not awful.
5) Response time on the handset dial pad is ok.
6) Range is good.
7) Every button on the handset lights up and the buttons have a good feel to them.
Something else I noticed that I like about this phone is that there is only one caller ID log and only one phone book. They are in the base only. The chordless handsets have access to the log and phone book on the base. This makes it easy to maintain the phone book and caller ID log since there is only one of each.
I just discovered two other features of this phone that I like.
If you subscribe to Caller ID and you receive a call from a number that you have in your phone book, the display will show the name from the phone book rather than the name from the incoming Caller ID.
Also, if you subscribe to Caller ID, the date and time are automatically updated from the Caller ID information.
If I could, I would change the rating to 5 stars.

This sound quality was fine, but the menus were bad and the response time on the dial pad was dreadful. I had to dial numbers over again as I would dial too fast for it. I returned it.
